Badia Fiorentina is located in Via del Proconsolo, in the heart of Florence, around Palazzo Vecchio and the cathedral.
The abbey was founded as a Benedictine institution in 978 by Willa, Margravine of Tuscany, in commemoration of her late husband Uberto, and was one of the most important buildings of medieval Florence.
Between 1284 and 1310 the Romanesque church was rebuilt in Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio, the same architect that designed Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral of Florence, the church of Santa Croce, the church of Santa Maria Novella , Palazzo Vecchio and many other buildings...
It is also famous for being the church where Dante met Beatrice Portinari - his lifelong true love - for the first time.
