Orsanmichele Church

Originally the church dedicated to "San Michele Arcangelo" was erected in a garden inside a convent: hence the name "San Michele in Orto".
In 1337 it was enlarged structurally ( two more floors being added) in order to contain grain in time of famine.
In 1380 the ground floor archways were closed, thus changing it into an unconventionally shaped church with two naves.
Many statues decorate the outer walls of "Orsanmichele" including the "San Matteo" bronze by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the "San Giorgio" by Donatello and the "San Tommaso" by Verrocchio.
